Justice Sought After Heartbreaking Independence Day Shooting

The city of Alton is in mourning following the tragic and senseless death of Shabrya L. Hudson, a 17-year-old girl whose life was cut short on Independence Day. The shooting occurred at the Oakwood Estates Housing Complex, casting a shadow of sorrow over what should have been a day of celebration.

Shabrya’s passing has devastated her family, friends, and the broader Alton community. Described as bright, kind-hearted, and full of potential, Shabrya had her whole future ahead of her. Her death marks not only a personal tragedy but a deeply felt community loss.

On Tuesday, July 8, authorities announced that Joshua L. Glen-Colley, an 18-year-old Alton resident, has been formally charged in connection with the shooting. As the investigation continues, local officials and community members are calling for justice while also reflecting on the urgent need to address the root causes of violence among youth.

Grief counselors and local leaders have stepped in to support those impacted, especially young people reeling from the trauma of losing a peer so suddenly and violently.

In memory of Shabrya, the community is encouraged to come together in compassion, accountability, and commitment to building a safer future for all of Alton’s children.

Rest in peace, Shabrya L. Hudson. You were loved, and you will not be forgotten.
