A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the community of Middleton, Wisconsin, after a double homicide and subsequent suicide claimed three lives on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
According to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a welfare check at the home of David and Teri Pabst on Stonebrook Circle after a family member grew concerned when the couple failed to arrive at their planned destinations that morning. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies learned that the couple’s 25-year-old son, James Pabst, had left the home just before authorities arrived and was believed to be armed and driving a white Honda Accord.
A statewide search was launched. Later that day, Wisconsin State Patrol located James traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 14 in Vernon County. A traffic stop was attempted near Patterson Road, and although James initially pulled over, he refused to exit the vehicle or speak to officers.
After an hour-long standoff, law enforcement officers approached the vehicle and found James Pabst deceased from an apparent suicide.
Inside the Middleton home, investigators confirmed that David and Teri Pabst had been fatally harmed, victims of what is now confirmed to be a double homicide. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading to this devastating event.
This tragedy has left a family shattered and a community in mourning. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office has extended condolences to all impacted and encourages anyone struggling with grief to seek support during this incredibly difficult time.
