Fatal Crash in Winston-Salem Claims Life of 24-Year-Old Man

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A tragic early morning crash on Saturday has claimed the life of a 24-year-old man and left another driver with minor injuries, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Officers responded to the scene just after 6:45 a.m. in the 300 block of Barnes Road near Kendall Drive, where a two-vehicle collision had occurred.

Police report that Nicholas Shepard, 24, was driving a 1996 Honda Civic westbound when he failed to maintain his lane of travel and crossed over the center double yellow line. The Civic then collided head-on with a 2005 Toyota Sienna traveling east and driven by a 39-year-old man.

Shepard was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. The driver of the Toyota Sienna sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby medical center for treatment.

Authorities have notified Shepard’s next of kin. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is not yet clear what may have contributed to the incident.
