Tragedy in Ware County: Teens Joey Nelson and Randall Martin III Killed by Lightning Strike While Fishing

With heavy hearts, the community of Ware County is mourning the tragic and sudden loss of Joey Nelson, 18, and Randall Martin III, 19, who were fatally struck by lightning on the night of Thursday, July 10, 2025. According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, the deadly lightning strike occurred in Waresboro, approximately seven to eight miles northwest of Waycross.

The Ware County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) reported that the young men were found by family members near Lejuene Road and Alton Circle around 10:16 p.m. Deputies responded promptly to the call, but tragically, both teens had already succumbed to the strike.

Waycross Mayor Dr. Michael-Angelo James confirmed the identities of the victims, noting that Joey and Randall were recent graduates of Ware County High School, having been standout athletes on the school’s beloved Gators football team. Joey graduated in 2024, and Randall just this past May in 2025. “Their dedication, sportsmanship, and energetic spirits left an indelible mark on their teammates, coaches, and the entire Waycross community,” said Mayor James.

Joey Nelson was also recognized as the grandnephew of City Clerk Jacqualine Powell, deepening the sense of loss among city staff and leadership. Waycross City Manager Ulysses D. Rayford confirmed that the teens had been out fishing at a nearby pond when the summer storm rolled in, and lightning tragically struck.

In an official statement, Mayor James expressed the grief felt across Waycross:

“On behalf of the City of Waycross, our deepest sympathies are extended to the Nelson and Martin families. We mourn with you, and we are here for you. The city will coordinate with Ware County Schools to support memorial events and ensure these young lives are honored with dignity.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will conduct autopsies to determine the official cause of death, though initial reports confirm lightning as the likely cause.

As Waycross and Ware County grieve, the community is urged to remember Joey and Randall not just for their athleticism, but for the joy, friendship, and inspiration they brought to those around them. Their lives, though cut short, touched many—and their memories will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

Rest in peace, Joey and Randall. You will never be forgotten.
