Lexington, KY — A devastating tragedy unfolded at Richmond Road Baptist Church as a shooting during a church gathering claimed the lives of three individuals and left several others injured. Authorities have now identified the suspected gunman as Guy E. House, a 38-year-old male, who is believed to have opened fire during the service in what officials are calling one of the most heartbreaking acts of violence in the city’s recent memory.
Among the deceased are Beverly “Gumm” Gum, 72, and Christina Combs, 32 — both beloved members of the Richmond Road Baptist Church congregation. The identity of the third deceased victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The shooting occurred during what was described as a peaceful church function, sending attendees into chaos and disbelief as the sound of gunfire echoed through the sanctuary. First responders arrived on the scene quickly, securing the area and providing aid to the wounded. Multiple victims were transported to local hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.
According to law enforcement sources, Guy E. House was known to some within the community, though a motive has not yet been publicly confirmed. Investigators are actively piecing together what led to the horrific attack and have not ruled out personal or mental health-related factors.
“This is a deeply painful day for Lexington,” said a spokesperson for the Lexington Police Department. “Our hearts are broken for the families of the victims, for the congregation, and for the entire community that is reeling from this senseless act of violence.”
Counseling services are being offered to survivors, church members, and community residents as the city begins the difficult process of healing from the trauma.
Richmond Road Baptist Church, a longtime cornerstone of the community, is now the site of candles, flowers, and prayers as mourners gather to remember those lost and to find comfort in each other.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident or the suspect’s background to come forward as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
As Lexington grieves, the memories of Beverly Gumm, Christina Combs, and the unnamed third victim will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them. The city stands united in mourning — and in the pursuit of justice and healing.
