Augusta, GA ā A suspicious death is under active investigation after a man was found dead early Tuesday morning near the sidewalk outside a vacant lot on Crawford Avenue.
According to officials, deputies with the Richmond County Sheriffās Office responded to a report of an unresponsive individual at approximately 6:25 a.m. near 636 Crawford Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered a man lying near the sidewalk. He was later identified as 28-year-old Brandon Tompkins, who was reported to be experiencing homelessness.
Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed that Tompkins was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death as investigators continue to evaluate the circumstances.
āThis is being treated as a suspicious death,ā stated Lt. James Kelly of the Sheriffās Office. āWe are actively working the case alongside the Coronerās Office.ā
