July 15 , the world grew quieter as Hazel Elizabeth Brown left her earthly body and entered the arms of Jesus. Just five years old, Hazel spent over two of those years battling DIPG — a diagnosis no child should ever face — with the kind of courage and strength that left us all in awe. Surrounded by her mom, dad, and big brother, Hazel took her final breath in peace and love, her spirit soaring to Heaven where there is no more pain, no more hospitals — only joy, freedom, and light.
Hazel was only three when she was diagnosed, but in her short life, she showed us all what it means to live fully. Her laughter filled rooms, her hugs healed hearts, and her compassion, even amid her own suffering, reminded us of what matters most. She was a bright, beautiful little girl — full of energy, wisdom far beyond her years, and a love so big it changed people. Hazel didn’t just fight — she lived, and she loved deeply.
We believe with all our hearts that she’s already heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” And oh, Hazel… it was so well done. Even though you were small, your spirit was massive, magnificent, and radiant — a light in the darkest of places. You lifted us, even as you danced your way through the pain. And now, free from that broken body, we know you’re dancing in the light.
It is never easy to write about the loss of a child. It should never be routine. Hazel and so many like her are not statistics. They are children — vibrant, extraordinary, and deserving of full lives. The fact that two families have had to say goodbye to two little girls in such a short span of time is unbearable. And Hazel, we are so, so sorry. We say it again and again — because it’s true — this world has not done enough for you and children like you. The lack of attention, funding, and urgency around DIPG and childhood brain cancer is heartbreaking. Our smallest warriors deserve more.
To those who have walked alongside Hazel’s family — through prayers, gifts, support, and love — thank you. You were part of a village that held them up when the weight became too much to bear. And to Hazel: You are forever etched into our hearts. We will say your name, share your story, and remember you always.
As one tribute beautifully says:
“As you danced in the light with joy, love lifted you. As you brushed against this world so gently, you lifted us.”
Please continue to hold Wesley, Leah, and Ashtenen in your prayers as they navigate the heartbreak no parent or sibling should ever have to endure. And hold Hazel in your hearts — where her light will always shine.
