According to the Houston Police Department (HPD), the elderly woman—well-known in the area for gathering cans—was retrieving aluminum cans that had been intentionally set out for her on the porch of a ground-floor apartment. As she approached the porch, 43-year-old Amber McNulty, a resident of that apartment, reportedly put on a ballistic vest, armed herself with a firearm, and fired multiple shots through a window, striking the woman. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. McNulty was detained without incident and has been charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon, but she has not yet been charged in connection with the fatal shooting. McNulty reportedly told authorities she felt threatened and believed she was acting in self-defense. However, no evidence of a threat has been confirmed at this time.
