BIRMINGHAM, AL — A late-night shooting at East Lake Park has left one person dead and another injured, marking a tragic night in the East Birmingham community.
Just after 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, officers from Birmingham’s East Precinct responded to reports of gunfire in the 100 block of 84th Street North, following an alert from the city’s Shot Spotter system, which detected approximately 10 rounds fired.
Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male unresponsive in the park. He had sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, according to Officer De’Rell Freeman. The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family.
A second individual was also found with injuries but is expected to recover. Authorities described the second victim’s wounds as non-life-threatening.
According to early reports, a group of individuals, including both men and women, had gathered at the park before gunfire broke out. The exact cause of the shooting remains unclear, and investigators are working to determine what led to the violent encounter.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
