With profound sorrow and deep love, we announce that Dakota Brooke Thacker, age 30, of Starke, Florida, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 13, 2025. Dakota’s life was a beautiful testament to strength, compassion, joy, and faith. Though her time here was far too short, the legacy she leaves behind will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who knew and loved her.
Born on June 8, 1995, in Gainesville, Florida, Dakota was the beloved daughter of Shannon Preston Thacker and Brandee Moody Barnes. A 2013 graduate of Keystone Heights High School, Dakota stood out both as a student and athlete, earning a volleyball scholarship to Lake Sumter State College. Her love for adventure and the western lifestyle later took her to South Dakota State University, where she joined the college rodeo team, forming lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories.
Dakota’s passion for horses began in childhood and became a defining part of who she was. She was a talented barrel racer and horsewoman whose connection to animals ran deep. Her constant companions included her beloved dogs, Waylon and Judd, and her horses, Nel and Juno—each of whom she loved like family.
In 2019, Dakota returned to Bradford County to pursue a career in nursing, driven by a heart for helping others. She earned her Licensed Practical Nurse certificate and served with compassion at Lake Butler Hospital. Her determination to grow in her calling led her to begin a bridge program to become a Registered Nurse—a goal she pursued with both passion and purpose.
Dakota’s faith was central to her life. She loved Jesus wholeheartedly and never shied away from sharing His love, even while acknowledging her own imperfections. Her radiant spirit, infectious laughter, and open heart made everyone around her feel seen, valued, and uplifted. Dakota had a unique gift of finding light in the darkest moments and joy in the simplest ones.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Martin and Judy Thacker, and her maternal grandfather, Robert “Bobby” Moody.
Dakota is survived by many who loved her deeply:
Her father, Shannon (Amanda) Thacker of Melrose, FL;
Her mother, Brandee (Richard) Barnes of Brooker, FL;
Her twin brother and best friend, Dalton (Taylor) Thacker;
Her sister, Josie Barnes;
Her stepsisters, Kelsey and Kendra Hassell, and Chelyen Barnes;
Her stepbrother, Hunter Barnes;
Her maternal grandmother, Diane Moody;
Her aunt, Nikki (Mitchell) Gunter;
And her cherished niece, Wiley Anne Thacker.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Sampson City Church of God, with Brother John Frampton and Pastor Mike Connor officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior. Arrangements are under the care of Archer-Milton Funeral Home, Lake Butler (386-496-2008)
A separate celebration of Dakota’s life will be held at a later date.
Dakota Brooke Thacker was a bright light in this world—an unforgettable soul whose warmth, strength, and faith will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her. Though we grieve, we do so with the hope and comfort that she now rides free in Heaven’s pastures, wrapped in eternal peace.
