TUSCALOOSA, AL — A high-speed police pursuit ended in tragedy Thursday evening when a suspect crashed his vehicle near Tamko Building Products after fleeing from a traffic stop attempt by the Tuscaloosa Police Department.
The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. when a Tuscaloosa Police patrol unit attempted to stop a vehicle for multiple traffic violations on Cousette Street, near its intersection with I-359. The driver, later identified as Jaylen Reed, 31, of Aliceville, Alabama, immediately fled at a high rate of speed.
The pursuit lasted less than 30 seconds, during which Reed’s vehicle crossed several intersections before leaving the roadway and violently crashing into a ditch and culvert near Tamko Building Products. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle.
Reed was the lone occupant of the car. He was found injured and unresponsive at the scene. Officers immediately rendered medical aid, and he was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center, where life-saving measures were attempted but ultimately unsuccessful. He was later pronounced dead.
Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved or struck during the incident. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Reed had multiple active felony warrants at the time of the pursuit.
Due to the involvement of the Tuscaloosa Police Department, the Violent Crimes Unit was called in to handle the investigation. In line with protocol, investigators and supervisors not affiliated with TPD will conduct the inquiry, with additional assistance from the Northport Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit.
The investigation remains active as authorities work to gather additional details surrounding the crash and the events leading up to it.
This marks yet another reminder of the dangerous consequences that can result from fleeing law enforcement. No further information has been released at this time.
