YOUNGTOWN, AZ — A West Valley community gathered in sorrow and solidarity this week to honor Celena Vega, a 29-year-old mother and Good Samaritan who tragically lost her life while trying to help a woman struck by a car in Youngtown.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the heartbreaking chain of events began Sunday night when a woman was hit by a vehicle along 111th Avenue. The driver fled the scene. Hearing the commotion from her home, Celena Vega, who recognized the injured woman as an acquaintance, rushed outside to help.
In a devastating turn of events, Celena was then hit by a second vehicle while trying to render aid. That driver remained at the scene. Celena suffered a severe brain injury and was rushed to the hospital, where she fought for her life. She passed away on Tuesday, leaving behind a family and community shattered by grief.
On Wednesday, friends, neighbors, and loved ones held a candlelight vigil to remember and celebrate her life. Her sister, Vanessa Vega, described Celena as a “free spirit, one-of-a-kind,” who radiated love and compassion to everyone she encountered. “That girl loved everyone, and everyone loved her,” she said.
Celena was a devoted mother to her three children and had been looking forward to her 30th birthday in September and her son’s upcoming eighth-grade graduation. Her death has left a void that words can’t fill—but her spirit lives on in the people she touched.
Even in death, Celena’s legacy of selflessness continues. As an organ donor, Celena is saving the lives of eight people, according to doctors. Her family gathered for an honor walk at the hospital, a moving tribute to her final act of giving.
In response to the tragedy, family members are also calling for change. “The speed limit maybe needs to change, or (city leaders) need to add speed bumps where the homes are,” said Christina Lopez, Celena’s sister, citing the danger and frequent speeding along 111th Avenue.
The original pedestrian who Celena tried to help remains hospitalized with serious injuries, though her current condition has not been confirmed.
Authorities have not released a description of the hit-and-run suspect’s vehicle, and it remains unclear whether charges will be filed against the driver who struck Celena.
The Vega family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and support her children during this difficult time. Anyone wishing to contribute can do so here:
