VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A deadly shooting in Virginia Beach on Friday night has resulted in the death of a 20-year-old man and the arrest of a suspect within hours of the incident.
Police were called to the 5500 block of New Colony Drive around 10:00 p.m. on July 18, 2025, following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Jamele Newby-Gibson, a Virginia Beach resident, lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound. Officers immediately began rendering medical aid before Newby-Gibson was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Homicide Unit launched an investigation that swiftly led to the identification of a suspect. By early Saturday morning, 19-year-old Nashaun Reid, also of Virginia Beach, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
In a statement, Police Chief Paul Neudigate commended the rapid work of officers and detectives involved in the case:
“I have to commend the work of our first responding zone officers and our detectives who diligently worked this case from the onset and were able to identify, apprehend, and charge the suspect in this offense within six hours from the time of the incident. To be able to remove a dangerous individual from our community and bring closure to a grieving family in such a short period speaks volumes to their dedication and professionalism.”
