Victim Identified in Fatal West Columbus Shooting; Investigation Ongoing

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred early Friday morning in the city’s west side as Ra’Quawan Kilgore, 29.

Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of South Guilford Avenue just before 6 a.m. on Friday, following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found Kilgore suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition throughout the day. Despite life-saving efforts, Kilgore succumbed to his injuries shortly after 5 p.m. Friday evening, authorities confirmed.

Police arrested an adult female at the scene who identified herself as the shooter. Investigators say the woman claimed she acted in self-defense, telling officers that Kilgore had threatened her prior to the shooting. Due to the ongoing investigation and the nature of the self-defense claim, officials have not yet released her identity.

Preliminary findings suggest that the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic violence situation. The woman is reportedly cooperating with detectives as they work to piece together the full series of events that led to the fatal encounter.

“This remains an active and sensitive investigation,” police said in a brief statement. “Detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and examine evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”

No formal charges have been filed at this time, and authorities say additional updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the Columbus Division of Police or submit an anonymous tip through Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).

This marks yet another devastating act of violence affecting a Columbus neighborhood, and both police and community leaders continue to emphasize the need for resources and intervention strategies in domestic conflict situations.
