KINSTON, LENOIR COUNTY — With deep sorrow, the Kinston community mourns the heartbreaking loss of Jaylen Green, a 16-year-old boy whose body was recovered from the Neuse River on Sunday, July 20, 2025, after an extensive search effort
Jaylen, who had autism and was non-verbal, was reported missing on Saturday after he was last seen at the Nature Center in Kinston. Wearing a peach-colored shirt and dark gray shorts, he disappeared in an area surrounded by natural beauty, a place he likely found joy in. Despite a vigorous multi-agency search, hope turned to grief when the operation shifted from a rescue to a recovery effort. Around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, divers from the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office recovered his body, bringing a tragic end to the search.
Kinston Police Chief Keith Goyette expressed the grief shared by the entire community, stating:
“Our hearts are heavy with the loss of Jaylen Green. On behalf of the entire department, I want to express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the search and ask the community to continue offering their support to the family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Jaylen’s passing has left a profound void not only in his family’s life but in the hearts of all who followed his story and prayed for his safe return. Known for his gentle nature and bright spirit, Jaylen was a beloved son, a treasured friend, and a cherished part of the Kinston community.
