TUSKEGEE, AL — The Tuskegee community is heartbroken over the passing of John “CoachBlack,” a beloved mentor, leader, and pillar of the community. Known affectionately as “Coach Black,” he served as the Offensive Coordinator and Owner/Head Coach of the Tuskegee Ayrmen football program and was a respected local business owner.

Coach Black’s impact reached far beyond the football field. A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, he remained rooted in Tuskegee, dedicating his life to uplifting and guiding the next generation through sports, mentorship, and entrepreneurship.

In addition to his leadership on the gridiron, Coach Black was a successful barbershop owner, offering more than just haircuts—his barbershop served as a safe space for conversation, advice, and inspiration for young men and community members alike. He was the kind of man whose presence could light up a room, whose words carried weight, and whose actions reflected his deep love for Tuskegee.

Under his leadership, the Tuskegee Ayrmen became more than just a team; it was a brotherhood, a mission, and a movement that gave local youth purpose, discipline, and pride. His players knew they could count on him for guidance, encouragement, and unwavering belief in their potential.

Coach Black’s sudden passing has left a tremendous void in the hearts of those who knew and admired him. Tributes have poured in from former players, community members, and colleagues who remember him not only for his coaching acumen, but for his kindness, wisdom, and relentless dedication to his hometown.

He was a father figure to many, a leader to all, and a friend whose legacy will echo through the streets, barbershops, and football fields of Tuskegee for years to come.

Funeral arrangements and memorial services will be announced in the coming days as the community prepares to honor and celebrate the life of a man who gave so much of himself to others.

Rest in power, Coach Black. Your legacy lives on in the lives you changed.
