Deandre Campbell, 36, has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in Lansing, Michigan. He tragically lost his life during one of four separate and violent incidents that unfolded across the city over the weekend.
According to Lansing Police Chief Rob Backus, the shooting took place around 3:45 a.m. on July 20 in the 3800 block of Wilson Avenue. Campbell had been attending a memorial gathering for a deceased individual when gunfire erupted, claiming his life. At a press conference held Monday, Chief Backus stated that while the investigation remains “very, very active,” there was no suspect information to share at that time.
Campbell’s death marked one of four shootings reported between Saturday and Sunday, highlighting a particularly violent stretch for the community. Among the other victims was a 15-year-old girl, who was critically injured when shots were fired into a crowd at a party in the 2500 block of Risdale Avenue just before 11 p.m. on July 19. Though in critical condition, she is expected to survive. Authorities plan to file charges against an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old in connection with that case.
Also on Saturday evening, a 26-year-old man was treated and released after being shot during an attempted robbery. Police arrested two juveniles, ages 16 and 17, while a third suspect remains at large.
On Sunday night, around 10:50 p.m., a fourth shooting occurred in the 3100 block of Turner Street following a dispute that began inside a store and continued outside. A 50-year-old man was injured, treated, and later released. Investigators have identified a person of interest in that case.
As of Monday, police do not believe any of the weekend’s shootings are connected. Authorities continue to investigate each incident separately and are urging anyone with information related to Campbell’s death or any of the other shootings to come forward.
Deandre Campbell is remembered by those who knew him as a kindhearted and loyal individual. His untimely death leaves a void in the lives of his loved ones and underscores the urgent need for community efforts to combat gun violence.
