Lubbock County. Authorities have confirmed the identities of two individuals who tragically lost their lives in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in southeast Lubbock County.
Jinmei Gao, 64, of Flushing, New York, and Jia Jin Wu, 18, of Lubbock, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred at approximately 7:23 a.m. on July 19 along the U.S. 84 north frontage road, roughly 0.69 miles northwest of Mimosa Avenue, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Gao was behind the wheel of a 2025 Mercedes-Benz traveling northwest on U.S. 84. After exiting onto the frontage road, the vehicle failed to navigate a sharp curve, continued straight off the roadway, and collided with a stationary railcar on the tracks. The vehicle caught fire upon impact.
It has not been confirmed whether either occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The exact nature of the relationship between Gao and Wu has not been determined, and the investigation into the contributing factors of the accident remains ongoing.
