The Kewanee community is grieving the tragic loss of Matthew P. Manthe, 51, who passed away following a pedestrian accident on Sunday night, July 20, 2025.
At approximately 10:11 p.m., officers from the Kewanee Police Department responded to the 1000 block of W. South Street after receiving reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian. Deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office also arrived to assist.
Upon arrival, authorities found Matthew critically injured. Officers and EMS personnel from the Kewanee Fire Department immediately began life-saving efforts. Matthew was first taken to a local hospital and later airlifted to a regional medical center, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Police say the vehicle that struck him was being driven by a 17-year-old, who has been cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. A Kewanee Police Department accident reconstructionist is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash, and the Peoria County Coroner’s Office is overseeing the investigation into the official cause of death.
Matthew P. Manthe was known in the community for his kindness, friendly spirit, and willingness to help others. His sudden and tragic passing has deeply affected friends, neighbors, and loved ones throughout Kewanee.
As the investigation continues, the community holds Matthew’s family and friends in its thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
He will be missed, remembered, and cherished always.
