MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis community is grieving the loss of Deonte Fletcher, who was tragically shot and killed on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2023, in Southeast Memphis. The Memphis Police Department has confirmed Fletcher’s identity as the victim in what has become one of the city’s final homicides of the year.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 5:15 p.m. in the 3300 block of River Valley Lane. By the time they arrived, Fletcher had already been transported to St. Francis Hospital, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later airlifted to Regional One Hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his wounds.
At the scene, police recovered a Palmetto PA-15 AR-style rifle and found several 9mm spent shell casings nearby, suggesting an exchange of gunfire. Investigators also noted that a black Ford four-door pickup truck was seen leaving the area shortly after the shooting. That vehicle is believed to be connected to the crime.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the suspect remains at large. The Memphis Police Department is continuing its investigation and urges anyone with information to come forward.
Deonte Fletcher’s death has left family and friends heartbroken, starting the new year with unimaginable grief. As detectives work tirelessly to find those responsible, the community holds his loved ones in their thoughts and hopes for swift justice.
