The city of San Antonio is deeply saddened by the passing of Kym Fox, a trailblazing journalist, dedicated educator, and cherished friend, who lost her courageous battle with cancer. Her passing marks the end of a life filled with passion for truth, storytelling, mentorship, and public service. Though her suffering has ended, the pain of her absence is profoundly felt by those who knew and loved her.
Kym Fox’s career in journalism was marked by excellence, integrity, and a deep commitment to the communities she served. She spent nearly two decades at the San Antonio Express-News, where she held roles as a reporter and later as Deputy Metro Editor from 1985 to 2003. Her sharp editorial instincts and fierce advocacy for honest reporting helped shape the newsroom and the journalists who worked alongside her.
In 2002, Kym joined Texas State University in San Marcos, where she became Professor of Practice and Journalism Program Coordinator. There, she inspired generations of aspiring reporters with her real-world knowledge, unrelenting support, and unwavering belief in the power of journalism to make a difference. Her students, many of whom have gone on to thriving careers, often cite her as a life-changing mentor.
Kym’s academic journey included studying Communications at the University of the Incarnate Word, and earning her M.A. in Journalism from Arizona State University, class of 1980. She was a proud graduate of Layton High School, where her passion for writing first took root.
Kym Fox leaves behind a legacy of top-tier journalism, transformative teaching, and lifelong friendship. She was a beacon of integrity, wisdom, and grace — someone who taught not just the craft of journalism, but the importance of empathy, curiosity, and truth.
Gone far too soon, Kym’s presence will be missed in every newsroom, classroom, and heart she touched. Her impact will live on through the countless lives she influenced, the stories she helped tell, and the lessons she so generously shared.
