Des Moines Man, 73, Charged with First-Degree Murder in Step-Grandson’s Fatal Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines community is reeling after a tragic and unsettling incident that resulted in the death of 38-year-old Ryan Schonlau, allegedly at the hands of his step-grandfather. According to the Des Moines Police Department, 73-year-old David Lee Ramsey has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning

Officers were dispatched to a home in the 200 block of Bell Avenue at approximately 12:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, police discovered Ryan Schonlau with a fatal gunshot wound. Emergency personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that both Ramsey and Schonlau lived at the residence where the shooting took place. Ramsey was present when officers arrived and was immediately detained without incident. He was later arrested and formally charged with first-degree murder.

At this time, investigators have not released details about what prompted the deadly confrontation or what might have motivated Ramsey to shoot his step-grandson. Officials have also not stated whether anyone else was inside the home during the shooting.
