A devastating crash in Stetson, Maine, on Wednesday afternoon has claimed the life of 64-year-old Scott Webber of Glenburn and left another man seriously injured. The fatal accident occurred around 1:09 p.m. at the intersection of Lapoint Road and Merrill Road, according to Maine State Police.
Authorities say the collision involved a fully loaded dump truck, driven by Webber, and a northbound tractor-trailer operated by 39-year-old Peter Omweno of Denton, Texas. Preliminary findings suggest that Omweno may have failed to stop at a posted stop sign on Lapoint Road before entering the intersection, where he struck Webber’s eastbound dump truck. The violent impact caused Webber’s vehicle to overturn, trapping him inside.
Emergency crews from the Levant and Hermon Fire Departments responded swiftly. Despite their efforts to free Webber and provide emergency care, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.
Omweno was extricated from his damaged truck and transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The aftermath of the crash required a coordinated effort from multiple agencies. Central Maine Power was called to the scene after the tractor-trailer struck a utility pole, which snapped and fell onto the cab of the vehicle, creating further hazards for first responders and motorists. Traffic in the area was disrupted for several hours as teams worked to clear debris, secure downed wires, and investigate the scene.
Scott Webber’s passing has left the Glenburn community in mourning. A respected professional, he was known for his reliable work in municipal and private construction projects. Colleagues described him as a skilled and safety-conscious driver who took pride in his craft.
Maine State Police continue to investigate the crash, reviewing physical evidence, vehicle damage, and witness accounts. No charges have been filed at this time, though authorities have not ruled out the possibility of future citations pending the outcome of the investigation.
As loved ones grieve the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Scott Webber, his memory lives on in the community he served. The tragedy underscores the critical importance of road safety and attentiveness—particularly at rural intersections where heavy-duty vehicles regularly travel.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who possesses dash cam footage is urged to contact Maine State Police.
