Springfield, MA — Authorities have made a major breakthrough in a deadly double shooting that rocked the Springfield community earlier this month. Sakawn Straw, a 32-year-old Springfield resident, was taken into custody Thursday morning in connection with the July 11 shooting that claimed the life of one man and left another injured.
Straw was arrested around 6 a.m. at a home on the 0-100 block of Revere Street, according to Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh. The arrest was a coordinated effort involving members of the Springfield Police Homicide Unit, the Emergency Services Unit (ESU), and the Warrant Apprehension Unit.
Straw faces multiple serious charges, including:
- Murder
- Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
- Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
- Carrying a Firearm without a License
- Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon
The charges stem from a violent incident that occurred just before 10:30 p.m. on July 11, when officers were called to the 200 block of Orange Street for reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, police found two men inside an apartment suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to Baystate Medical Center. One of the victims, 54-year-old Eric Wilson, tragically succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, whose name has not been publicly released, is expected to recover.
The Springfield Police Homicide Unit, led by Captain Trent Duda, launched an extensive investigation in collaboration with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit, under DA Anthony Gulluni. Through that effort, Straw was identified as the primary suspect.
Straw was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Springfield District Court.
Police have not released a motive for the shooting, and the relationship between Straw and the victims remains under investigation. Officials continue to urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
“This arrest is a critical step forward in securing justice for Mr. Wilson and in holding accountable those who bring senseless violence to our streets,” said a department spokesperson. “We remain committed to tackling gun violence and keeping our neighborhoods safe.”
