The Rochester community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Ricardo Carrero Chico, a recent graduate of East Upper School, who tragically lost his life in a car crash on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, along I-590 South.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene at approximately 2:36 p.m. after receiving reports of a three-vehicle collision that was blocking all lanes of traffic near Browncroft Boulevard.
Investigators determined that Ricardo, driving a white sedan, was traveling northbound on I-590 when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the median, and entered the southbound lanes, colliding with two other vehicles. Ricardo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three occupants of the other vehicles involved sustained minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The crash caused a temporary shutdown of I-590 South between Empire Boulevard and Blossom Road, with lanes reopening shortly after 5 p.m.
Ricardo had recently graduated as part of East Upper School’s Class of 2025, and his sudden passing has left a deep void within the school community. In a statement, the Rochester City School District expressed its profound grief:
“The Rochester City School District is heartbroken over the tragic loss of a recent graduate from East Upper School. Ricardo Carrero Chico, a proud member of the Class of 2025, passed away on Tuesday, July 22. Our thoughts are with everyone who knew and loved him. We are holding his family close in our hearts and offering our full support to the East staff and students who are grieving.”
Counseling and emotional support services have been made available at East Upper School to help students and staff cope with this tragic loss. The district has stated it will continue to provide support while respecting the family’s privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
Ricardo will be remembered for his bright spirit, ambition, and the positive impact he had on those around him. His passing is a devastating blow to all who knew him, and the community joins together in mourning his loss.
