BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Authorities have identified the victim in a tragic single-vehicle crash that occurred early Thursday morning near the Old Courthouse in downtown Bardstown.
According to the Nelson County Coroner’s Office, the victim has been identified as 36-year-old Michael David Stegall of Nelson County. Officials say Stegall was driving when his vehicle left the roadway and collided with the east side of the historic courthouse building.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene, but despite their efforts, Stegall was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet released details about what may have led to the crash.
Local officials say there was no structural compromise to the building, though minor damage was sustained. The incident is a sobering reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike and has left the Bardstown community mourning the loss of a life taken too soon.
