Palaiambela, Greece — Deep sorrow surrounds the tragic passing of Alexander Stephanopoulos, a 42-year-old Greek-American from Los Angeles, who lost his life in a fatal car accident on the afternoon of Saturday, July 26, 2025, in the Palaiambela region of Vonitsa, in Greece’s Aetolia-Acarnania region.
According to The National Herald, Stephanopoulos—who was in Greece enjoying a summer vacation—was the sole occupant of the vehicle when it veered off the Amfilochia-Lefkada National Road, collided with a cypress tree, and overturned. Emergency responders, including firefighters, ambulance personnel, and traffic police, arrived at the scene, but tragically, Stephanopoulos had already succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Vonitsa Health Center.
The severity of the crash was evident in the wreckage, images of which show the car extensively damaged. Stephanopoulos’s identity was not immediately confirmed at the scene, but was later established. Born in 1983, he was the son of Gregory Stephanopoulos and a well-known member of the Greek-American community.
The stretch of road where the crash occurred is known for its dangerous conditions, with multiple previous accidents reported in the area, raising continued concerns about road safety along that route.
Alexander Stephanopoulos is remembered by family, friends, and all who knew him as a kind, vibrant soul who carried his heritage proudly and had a deep love for both his Greek roots and his American home.
His unexpected passing is a heartbreaking loss for the Greek-American community both in Greece and the United States.
