BATON ROUGE, LA — A community is reeling after a tragic shooting claimed the life of a pregnant woman and her unborn child early Sunday morning at the Elevate at Highland apartment complex, formerly known as The Hub.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Kimberlyn Martin was one of two victims shot at the complex located on Highland Road. Both Martin and an unidentified man were rushed to the hospital following the gunfire. Sadly, Martin and her unborn baby did not survive. The male victim is expected to recover.
The devastating incident marks another act of violence at a location already under scrutiny for public safety concerns. District Attorney Hillar Moore was present at the scene but declined to offer comments until he receives further details from investigators. Moore has previously voiced concern over the complex, particularly following a September 2023 shooting, when he revealed his office had engaged with management in efforts to address ongoing criminal activity.
“Pre-COVID, we saw a lot of instances that were going on there,” Moore said in a past statement. “We filed a notice at that point, and they did take some action to rectify the problems. We saw a decrease at that point. Then COVID hit, and things got out of hand all over.”
The apartment complex has since changed ownership and now operates under new management as Elevate at Highland, though concerns about safety remain front and center for both residents and city officials.
No suspects have been publicly identified, and the investigation remains ongoing. Baton Rouge Police urge anyone with information to come forward.
As the community mourns the loss of Kimberlyn Martin and her unborn child, calls for accountability and change continue to grow.
