MT. VERNON, IL – The Mt. Vernon Police Department has released the identities of two men killed in a tragic mass shooting that occurred early Friday morning in the 600 block of South 15th Street.
The victims have been identified as 20-year-old Zomarrius Williams of Mt. Vernon and 26-year-old Demonta Woodward of Mounds. Both men succumbed to their injuries at the scene after gunfire erupted, leaving five others wounded in what authorities describe as a chaotic and violent event.
In a significant development, police have arrested 22-year-old Jerria J. Smith of Mt. Vernon. She is facing charges of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Obstruction of Justice in connection to the shooting. Authorities believe further arrests and charges are likely as the investigation continues and more evidence is processed.
Police emphasize that the investigation is active and ongoing, with detectives working around the clock to identify all individuals involved and to understand the motive behind the violence.
