Brian Hanson Identified as Victim in Fatal Incident at Sibanye-Stillwater Mine

STILLWATER COUNTY, MT — Authorities have identified Brian Hanson, a 50-year-old resident of Laurel, as the employee who tragically lost his life in a workplace incident at the Sibanye-Stillwater Mine over the weekend.

According to the Stillwater County Sheriff’s Office, which also serves as the county coroner, Hanson was fatally electrocuted on Saturday morning while performing routine maintenance duties on the east side of the mine. The incident has been described by mine officials as an electrical-related accident.

Hanson’s death is currently under further investigation, with the Montana State Crime Lab conducting an official review to confirm the precise circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

A spokesperson for Sibanye-Stillwater informed MTN News that mining operations were immediately halted following the incident. While a limited crew resumed work on Monday, the mine has not yet announced a timeline for the full restoration of operations.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has also launched an investigation into the fatal accident.
