Fatal Crash Under Investigation After Vehicle Plunges from Overpass in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, Del. — A fatal crash is under investigation after a vehicle veered off the road and plunged from an overpass Monday evening, July 28, 2025, in Middletown.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 6:08 p.m. to the area near Route 301 North and the Summit Bridge Road (Route 896) off-ramp, following reports of a vehicle leaving the roadway. According to initial reports, the vehicle crashed approximately 25 feet below the Route 896 overpass, coming to rest in a severely damaged state.

First responders arrived on scene and found heavy entrapment, prompting an immediate call for additional rescue resources. On-scene reports indicated that one of the vehicle’s occupants may have been ejected during the crash, though it remains unclear whether that person was the driver or a passenger.

A woman in her 60s was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. A second occupant suffered critical injuries and was airlifted by Delaware State Police Aviation to a nearby trauma center for emergency care.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved, pending family notification. The cause of the crash and events leading up to it remain under active investigation.

Traffic in the area was disrupted for several hours as emergency personnel and investigators worked the scene. Motorists were urged to seek alternate routes during the investigation.

Delaware State Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information to come forward.
