Fatal Semi Crash in Lancaster County Under Investigation

LANCASTER COUNTY, Neb. — Authorities are investigating a fatal semi-truck collision that occurred Tuesday afternoon in northern Lancaster County, leaving one person dead and another injured.

Emergency crews from Raymond, Lancaster, and Waverly responded to the scene just after 12:20 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 77 and Waverly Road.

According to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Captain John Vik, initial reports suggest that a westbound semi failed to yield at a stop sign and collided with a southbound semi. Both trucks — one of which was hauling grain—veered into a ditch, and at least one of the semis appeared to have overturned.

Tragically, the driver of the westbound semi was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead. The driver of the southbound truck managed to exit the vehicle and was transported for medical care. One of the drivers was airlifted by LifeNet, while the other was taken by ground ambulance.

The collision resulted in a spill of both grain and fuel, prompting an extended closure of the surrounding roadways as crews worked to secure the area and begin cleanup. All roads were reopened by 5:55 p.m. that evening.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol, is continuing its investigation. An official update is expected to be released Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been made public, pending notification of next of kin. The community remains on alert as officials work to determine the exact cause of this tragic crash.
