HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. — It is with heavy hearts that several football communities across Western Pennsylvania are mourning the unexpected passing of Coach TJ Detruf, a devoted mentor, former player, and beloved figure in high school athletics. Detruf, 41, died suddenly on Saturday at his home in Hempfield Township.
Coach Detruf served as an assistant freshman football coach at Penn Trafford High School, where he spent the past three seasons helping to shape young athletes on and off the field. In a heartfelt statement, the P-T Football program shared:
“Coach TJ has been an integral part of our football family, and his contributions have left an indelible mark on all of us. His dedication, passion, and unwavering support for our players have been truly inspiring, and his absence will be deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
A 2002 graduate of Jeannette High School, Detruf was a standout athlete and served as the starting quarterback for the Jayhawks. He played a vital role in the school’s 2001 Century Conference Championship Team, where he was also recognized as a team captain and a natural leader on the field.
Beyond Penn Trafford, Detruf had a long-standing impact at Jeannette High School as well—serving in multiple coaching roles including quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator, and middle school head coach. His influence on young athletes spanned generations, and his leadership style was rooted in mentorship, commitment, and compassion.
Jeannette Head Coach Tommy Paulone Jr. announced the heartbreaking news early Monday, describing Detruf as not only a valued colleague but a cherished friend and former teammate.
Detruf’s sudden passing has left a wave of grief across both the Penn Trafford and Jeannette football communities, who are now coming together to honor a man who gave so much of himself to others. Tributes have poured in on social media from former players, fellow coaches, and families who credit Detruf with making a lasting difference in their lives.
Plans for a memorial service or tribute have not yet been announced.
Please keep Coach Detruf’s family, friends, players, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. His legacy as a coach, mentor, and friend will live on in the many lives he touched.
