NEW YORK — Four people, including a New York Police Department officer, were killed in a shooting Monday afternoon at a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, according to law enforcement officials.
The gunman, believed to be a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, died from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His identity has not yet been publicly released, but sources say he held a concealed carry permit for a handgun and had previously been licensed as a private investigator, though that license had expired.
The shooting took place inside 345 Park Avenue, a 634-foot-tall skyscraper that spans an entire city block and houses major offices including Blackstone and NFL headquarters. Located just blocks from Grand Central Terminal, the Museum of Modern Art, and Rockefeller Center, the area is typically bustling with commuters, tourists, and office workers.
Sources told CNN the suspect was seen exiting his vehicle alone before entering the building. Once inside, he opened fire, fatally shooting an off-duty NYPD officer who was working a private security detail, along with three other individuals. The gunman later barricaded himself on the 33rd floor before dying by suicide.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, and the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
Police and emergency responders quickly locked down the area and urged the public to avoid East 52nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues due to the ongoing response and investigation.
