It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic and untimely passing of Michael LaMotte, age 14, who was fatally shot on the night of Friday, July 25, 2025, at the University of New Mexico. Michael’s life was cut short by a senseless act of violence, leaving his family, friends, and community heartbroken.
Michael was a student at Rio Rancho High School, preparing to begin his sophomore year this fall. He was just days away from his 15th birthday, which he was set to celebrate on August 5. A gifted and passionate soul, Michael had a deep love for music and was known for his angelic singing voice and talent with the violin. His family lovingly shared a video of him performing—an enduring reminder of the light he brought into the world.
“Michael was an incredible boy who was taken from this world far too soon,” the LaMotte family shared. “He was a cherished son, brother, and a true friend to many. His absence has created a void in the lives of all who knew and loved him.”
According to authorities, Michael was one of several individuals in a room at a UNM student’s residence where video games were being played. For reasons still under investigation, a suspect opened fire. Michael was fatally shot and remained at the scene, while the shooter and others fled. The incident remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police and UNM Police.
