One Victim Identified in Grand Sierra Resort Mass Shooting: Community Rallies Around Son of Andrew Canepa

RENO, Nev. — Authorities have identified Andrew Canepa as one of the three people killed in the mass shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort on the morning of July 28. The tragedy unfolded around 7:25 a.m. in the valet area of the resort, sending shockwaves through the Reno community.

Canepa, who was reportedly on his way home to pick up his six-year-old son, Kayden, was fatally shot in the attack. Loved ones describe Andrew as a devoted and loving father, deeply committed to his son’s happiness and well-being. His loss has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew him, especially young Kayden, now left to grow up without his father.

“Andrew lived for Kayden,” a family friend shared. “He worked hard, showed up for every school event, every birthday, every moment that mattered.”

The shooting left three people dead and three others injured. Two of the victims died at the scene, while a third passed away at a local hospital. Two survivors remain in critical condition, and one person was treated and released.

According to the Sparks Police Department, the gunman—an adult male—entered the resort’s parking lot, walked toward the valet area, and opened fire on a group of people. Five were struck by the initial gunfire.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect or a motive for the attack, and the investigation remains ongoing.

In the wake of the tragedy, a wave of community support has emerged for Kayden. Local residents, friends, and strangers alike have begun rallying around the child, with fundraisers and support efforts aimed at helping provide stability and comfort in the face of unimaginable loss.

A memorial is being planned to honor Andrew Canepa’s life, and grief counselors have been made available for those affected by the tragic event.
