PEORIA, IL — A summer celebration turned tragic on Monday, July 28, 2025, when two young children were found unresponsive in a swimming pool at Mt. Hawley Country Club in Peoria.
Peoria Police responded to the 7700 block of N. Knoxville Avenue around 7:44 p.m. after receiving a report that two children had been discovered unconscious in the water. The incident occurred during a private employee appreciation event, with the pool closed to the general public at the time.
According to officials, country club staff acted quickly, performing lifesaving measures before first responders arrived. An 8-year-old child regained consciousness at the scene, while a 6-year-old was resuscitated in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Both were transported to a local medical center for further treatment.
As of Tuesday morning, the 6-year-old remains in critical condition.
The Peoria Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. No further details about how the children ended up in the pool or whether supervision was in place have been released.
