13-Year-Old Aymira Thomas Fatally Shot by Older Brother in Canton; Investigation Ongoing

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Heartbreak has struck the Canton community following the tragic death of 13-year-old Aymira Thomas, who was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon at the Ridgeline Apartments near Joy Road and Honeytree Boulevard.

According to Canton Township Police, the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. and involved Aymira’s 21-year-old brother, who is now in custody. Authorities have not yet determined whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, as the investigation remains in its early stages.

ā€œPublic safety was on scene within two minutes, attempting life-saving efforts,ā€ said Deputy Chief Joseph Bialy during a press briefing. ā€œDespite their efforts, the 13-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries.ā€

While police responded rapidly, tragedy extended further when one of the responding patrol vehicles was involved in a crash at Cherry Hill and Lilley roads. Minor injuries were reported from that collision.

The sudden loss of Aymira Thomas has left her family and the wider community in shock. Grief is spreading across the neighborhood as residents struggle to understand how such a devastating event could unfold within their midst.
