DILLON COUNTY, S.C. — The Dillon County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that 78-year-old Calvin Dunson was the individual killed in a serious two-vehicle crash late Friday night that also left four others injured. Coroner Donnie Grimsley stated that an autopsy determined Dunson died from injuries sustained in the collision.
The fatal crash occurred around 10:50 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 301 and Elkins Road, just outside the town of Dillon. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Dunson was a passenger in a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis traveling east on Elkins Road. The vehicle collided with a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck that was heading north on Highway 301.
Emergency personnel quickly responded to the scene and transported Dunson to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
The driver of the Mercury Grand Marquis was also hospitalized, while three occupants of the Dodge Ram sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. As of now, officials have not released updated information on the conditions of the survivors.
The Highway Patrol is actively investigating the crash. Authorities have not commented on whether any charges will be filed or if speed, impairment, or other factors played a role in the collision.
