MILWAUKEE — Authorities have identified the innocent driver killed in a tragic crash during a police pursuit on Milwaukee’s east side. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that 28-year-old El Moctar Sidiya lost his life in the collision that occurred Tuesday night, July 29.
Sidiya, who came to the United States in 2023 from Mauritania, a country in northwest Africa, was pursuing a better future when his life was abruptly cut short. His brother told TMJ4 News that Sidiya came to Milwaukee full of hope, looking to build a new life.
The fatal crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Humboldt and Brady Streets. According to Milwaukee police, the incident began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving near Teutonia Avenue and North Avenue. The driver refused to pull over, leading officers on a high-speed chase that ended when the fleeing suspect crashed into Sidiya’s car.
Sidiya was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. A 27-year-old passenger in his vehicle was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials have not yet released further details about the fleeing driver, including whether any charges have been filed.
El Moctar Sidiya’s death has left a community in mourning—both in Milwaukee and abroad. Loved ones describe him as a kind, hardworking man who had just begun building his life in the U.S.
This devastating incident has raised renewed concerns about the risks and consequences of high-speed police chases in densely populated urban areas.
As the investigation continues, community members and leaders are calling for accountability and reflection in the wake of Sidiya’s senseless death.
