DILLON COUNTY, S.C. – Authorities have identified the woman fatally stabbed in Dillon County earlier this week as 29-year-old Vantazia Campbell. Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley confirmed her identity and announced that her body has been transported to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston for a full autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The stabbing occurred in the early hours of Monday morning at the Sunflower Apartments. Deputies with the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call around 12:15 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Campbell suffering from stab wounds. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
By Monday afternoon, authorities arrested Johnny Leach, a local resident, in connection with the killing. Leach has been formally charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. His arrest came just hours after Campbell’s body was found. On Tuesday, Leach appeared in court for a bond hearing where a judge denied bond. He is currently being held at the Dillon County Detention Center as the investigation continues.
The relationship between Leach and Campbell has not been disclosed, and investigators have yet to confirm a motive. The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office is actively working the case, conducting interviews and reviewing evidence to better understand what led to the fatal attack.
