CIMARRON, Kan. – The Gray County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its own. Lt. Matt Markel, a dedicated and well-respected member of the department, passed away Wednesday night after suffering a sudden medical emergency at his home.
According to a statement from Sheriff Jeff Sharp, Lt. Markel was transported by Gray County EMS to St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, but despite the best efforts of first responders and medical personnel, he did not survive.
In an emotional tribute, Sheriff Sharp described Lt. Markel as a consummate professional and a man known for his strength, humor, and unwavering dedication to both his family and his fellow officers. “Anyone who knew Matt on any level knew him as a consummate professional in mind, body and spirit,” Sharp said. “He was a joker, and you could always count on Matt to make the best of any situation.”
Lt. Markel’s passing is deeply felt throughout the department and the broader Gray County community. His pride in his family—both at home and within the Sheriff’s Office—was always apparent, and his positive influence on those around him left a lasting impression.
“He may not have been a poet or a philosopher of college standards, but his eloquence in farm and law spoke volumes,” said Sheriff Sharp, adding that the good a person does may not always be seen, but its impact is lasting—something he learned from Matt.
Further details regarding memorial services and public tributes will be shared by the department in the coming days.
The Gray County Sheriff’s Office asks the public to keep the Markel family in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Lt. Matt Markel. Your legacy of service, kindness, and strength will not be forgotten.
