RENO, NV – Dakota Hawver, the alleged gunman in the deadly mass shooting outside Reno’s Grand Sierra Resort, has died after sustaining gunshot wounds during a confrontation with police. Authorities confirmed Thursday morning that the 26-year-old Reno resident succumbed to his injuries overnight. He had remained in critical condition since the shooting occurred early Monday morning.
The violent attack claimed the lives of three people and left two others injured. According to investigators, two of the victims were visiting from Southern California for a bachelor party, while the third, 66-year-old Angel Martinez, was a local resident.
Hawver reportedly fired around 80 rounds from a 9mm handgun, which officials say he legally purchased two years ago. Investigators have found no prior criminal history or mental health concerns connected to him, and no known ties between Hawver, the victims, or the casino. The motive behind the shooting remains undetermined.
The chaos unfolded when Hawver approached the valet area of the resort, initially attempting to fire on a group of people. Though his gun initially malfunctioned, he quickly cleared the jam and opened fire. Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 33 and from Southern California, were shot from behind while waiting for an airport ride.
As he fled through the parking lot, Hawver fatally shot Angel Martinez, who was driving nearby. Police say the shooter had been hiding behind a parked vehicle before attacking.
Hawver was eventually confronted by an armed security guard from the casino. He opened fire on the guard, prompting a return of gunfire. Police officers then engaged Hawver, shooting and apprehending him before transporting him to the hospital, where he later died.
The two surviving victims remain hospitalized but are expected to recover fully.
The Grand Sierra Resort, one of Reno’s largest venues, has hosted major concerts, sporting events, and even a presidential campaign rally. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised questions about gun violence, safety at public venues, and the broader mental health landscape.
Authorities continue to investigate the shooter’s background and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
