Cody T. Goetsch Seriously Injured in Sheboygan Crash; Other Driver Arrested for OWI
SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, Wis. — Authorities have identified the individuals involved in a serious two-vehicle collision that occurred Monday night on Lakeshore Road, resulting in significant injuries to one driver and the arrest of another on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The crash happened around 9:55 p.m. on July 28, near Willow Creek Lane, according to the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. Initial investigations reveal that 52-year-old Donald C. Hammond Jr., of Sheboygan, was driving south on Lakeshore Road and attempting a turn when his vehicle collided with a northbound car.
That northbound vehicle was driven by 23-year-old Cody T. Goetsch, also of Sheboygan. Goetsch suffered serious injuries in the crash. Emergency responders quickly arrived on scene, and due to the severity of his condition, he was airlifted by Flight for Life to receive critical medical care.
Hammond, who sustained only minor injuries, was taken into custody at the scene. Investigators determined that multiple factors contributed to the crash. While Goetsch was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, authorities also cited alcohol use and failure to yield on Hammond’s part as major contributing elements.
Hammond now faces charges of Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) Causing Injury, a felony offense in Wisconsin. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to determine whether additional charges will be filed.
The crash has reignited local concerns about the dangers of impaired and reckless driving. Officials warn that a combination of speed, alcohol, and failure to follow traffic laws can lead to devastating consequences.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, and the roadway was temporarily shut down Monday night while emergency crews, deputies, and crash reconstruction teams documented the scene and interviewed witnesses.
At this time, Cody Goetsch’s condition has not been publicly updated, but family, friends, and community members remain hopeful for his full recovery. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office.
Further updates will be released as the investigation progresses and legal proceedings continue.
