Megan Peterkin Identified as Victim in Fatal Vancouver Apartment Fire
VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the woman who tragically lost her life in an apartment fire earlier this year as 38-year-old Megan Peterkin, a resident of Vancouver.
The fatal blaze occurred during the early morning hours of May 2 at a three-story apartment complex on East 5th Street. When Vancouver Fire Department crews arrived on scene, they found the fire had already spread rapidly throughout the building. A second alarm was issued to bring in additional personnel and resources as firefighters worked to contain the flames.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze within approximately 30 minutes, but during their search of the structure, they discovered Peterkin deceased inside. On July 31, the medical examiner officially confirmed that Peterkin died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, ruling her death accidental.
The fire displaced approximately 20 residents, many of whom lost their homes and belongings. Fire officials have not yet released further details regarding the origin or cause of the fire, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Peterkin’s death serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of residential fires and the critical need for fire safety measures—especially in multi-family housing complexes. Her passing has deeply impacted the community, as neighbors continue to mourn her loss and support one another in the aftermath.
As displaced residents begin the long process of recovery, the community is also reflecting on the importance of fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and the strength found in coming together during times of tragedy.
