STATESVILLE, NC – The Statesville Police Department is actively investigating a tragic homicide that occurred on Saturday, August 2, 2025, in the 1000 block of Fifth Street.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., officers responded to a call regarding a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they discovered 51-year-old Surtonia Burton, a Fifth Street resident, lying in front of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds. She was quickly transported by Iredell County EMS for emergency medical treatment but tragically succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
The SPD Criminal Investigations Division and Violent Crimes Unit immediately began processing the scene and gathering evidence. Investigators identified 26-year-old Titeon Breshaun Burton, also of Fifth Street, as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting.
Later that afternoon, around 4:45 p.m., SPD officers located Titeon Burton at a business on Oakland Avenue. When officers attempted to detain him, he fled on foot, leading them to a residence on Broom Street. As officers closed in, Burton sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported by EMS but was pronounced deceased en route to the hospital.
The Statesville Police Department has extended its deepest condolences to the Burton family as they navigate this profound loss.
This remains an active investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
