NYSP Identifies Victim in Fatal Plane Crash in Steuben County

HORNELLSVILLE, N.Y. — The New York State Police have identified the victim of a fatal plane crash that occurred Friday evening in Steuben County. According to authorities, 41-year-old Brian J. Valder, a resident of Penfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency responders were dispatched just after 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1, following reports of a downed aircraft near Morton Hill Road in the town of Hornellsville. Upon arrival, first responders found the wreckage and confirmed the death of the sole occupant.

A preliminary investigation by the New York State Police indicates that the aircraft had departed earlier from the Brockport area before crashing. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have both responded to the crash site and are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As of Saturday, Morton Hill Road has been reopened to traffic in the vicinity of the crash site, though investigators remain on scene.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the type of aircraft involved or any potential causes of the crash. The FAA and NTSB are expected to conduct a thorough investigation, which may take several weeks to complete.

The New York State Police say that additional updates will be provided as new information becomes available. They also extended their condolences to the family and loved ones of Brian J. Valder during this difficult time.
