The suspect in the fatal shootings has been identified as 45-year-old Michael Brown, who remains at large as of Sunday morning. Brown, reportedly a regular at the bar and a neighbor to the establishment, is believed to have known both the bartender and patrons he fatally shot. Authorities have not yet determined a motive.

According to Montana Attorney General Austen Knudsen, the weapon used in the attack was a rifle, though the specific make and model have not been disclosed. Brown fled the scene after the shooting, reportedly removing his clothes and escaping in a stolen truck containing camping gear. Authorities believe he changed into clothes from the vehicle.

A large-scale manhunt is underway, with a “tremendous number of assets” focused on the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness area, particularly near Stumptown Road between Anaconda and Georgetown Lake. Law enforcement officials are urging residents in the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

“There is concern he may come back into town,” said Knudsen. “We are deeply concerned for the public’s safety.”

Brown’s niece, Clare Boyle, spoke publicly about the tragedy, expressing deep sorrow for the victims and their families. “My heart breaks for this town. There is no amount of apology or words that could ever describe how sorry I am and how I feel for these families, my own included,” Boyle said.

She also revealed that Brown had long struggled with mental health issues, including schizophrenia and PTSD stemming from military service. Brown, the son of a serviceman, moved frequently and had a history of instability.

As the investigation and search continue, the Anaconda community is left reeling from the violence. Authorities ask anyone with information to contact law enforcement immediately.
