Middleburg, FL — A 14-year-old boy is in custody after allegedly fatally shooting his parents and then calling 911 to report the killings, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities identified the deceased as 44-year-old David Lee and 45-year-old Brandi Smith, who were found shot to death in their Middleburg home shortly after midnight on Sunday, August 4. The suspected shooter, their son Trevor Lee, is now facing two counts of second-degree murder.
Sheriff Michelle Cook said during a press conference that the teen called 911 and confessed to the killings. He told dispatchers that his parents’ bodies could be found at their home and that he had walked approximately one mile to a nearby church, where he planned to wait for deputies.
Responding officers took Trevor into custody at the church without incident. Meanwhile, other deputies arrived at the home, where they discovered both David and Brandi deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
“It seems that there was some form of domestic dispute last night between Trevor Lee and his parents, and that this shooting resulted from that altercation,” said Sheriff Cook.
The firearm used in the shooting was left at the scene and has since been recovered. Authorities believe the weapon belonged to the parents.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragic events. Middleburg is located about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville.
“This is a heartbreaking case for our entire community,” Sheriff Cook added. “We ask for prayers for the extended family, the first responders, and everyone affected by this senseless act of violence.”
