SPARTANBURG, SC –A heartbreaking act of violence has shaken the Spartanburg community to its core, as authorities have confirmed the tragic death of 7-month-old Zymir Demarco Smith in the early hours of Sunday, August 3, 2025.
Just after 4:00 a.m., gunfire erupted at a residence on Collins Avenue. According to police, the home was struck multiple times in a targeted shooting. During the incident, baby Zymir was hit in the neck by a bullet. He was immediately rushed to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where—despite efforts to save him—he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Zymir’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief, anger, and calls for accountability across the city. Family, friends, and neighbors describe him as a joyful baby whose smile brought light to everyone around him. His senseless death has left a devastating impact on all who knew him.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting and urge anyone with information to come forward. As one community member shared, “Thoughts and prayers aren’t enough—this baby didn’t deserve this, and silence only protects the shooters. It’s time to speak up.”
